Working as a CRNA in Massachusetts

Massachusetts remains one of the strongest states for CRNA practice due to its concentration of nationally recognized hospital systems and anesthesia groups. CRNAs work in major institutions such as Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Tufts Medical Center, UMass Memorial Health, and Boston Medical Center. Practice settings range from Level I Trauma Centers and academic medical systems to outpatient surgery centers and community hospitals.

Massachusetts does not mandate physician supervision for nurse anesthetists. CRNAs may practice independently, although scope of practice and clinical responsibilities are further defined by facility credentialing and policy. The state continues to support advanced practice nursing roles and provides an environment where CRNAs often function with a high degree of autonomy while collaborating as part of multidisciplinary anesthesia teams.

Competitive compensation, strong professional advocacy, and access to top-tier clinical environments make Massachusetts an excellent state for CRNAs seeking a wide range of patient cases and advanced anesthesia practice opportunities.

Education and Certification

  • Educational Requirement: CRNAs must complete a doctoral degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program.
  • Certification: After graduation, candidates must pass the National Certification Examination (NCE) administered by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).

Licensure

Scope of Practice

  • Autonomy: CRNAs in Massachusetts can practice independently, providing anesthesia care without physician supervision.
  • Prescriptive Authority: CRNAs are authorized to prescribe medications as part of their practice.

Collaboration

CRNA-only model, Collaborative Care Model, and Anesthesia Care (ACT) Model.

State Regulations

CRNAs should stay updated on any changes in state laws and regulations affecting their practice. For current information, check out the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing and Massachusetts CRNA Association.
