The Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia program at Midwestern University prepares registered nurses to become Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) through a rigorous, 27-month, full-time curriculum. Program Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
  • Licensure: Current, unrestricted RN license in the United States or its territories.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years of full-time critical care nursing experience by the application deadline.
    • Acceptable experience includes: Adult ICU, Pediatric ICU, Emergency Room, and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
    • Not accepted: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
    • Experience should include the management of mechanical ventilation, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, and vasoactive medication infusions.
  • Academic Performance:
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
    • Minimum science GPA of 3.0 (based on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, chemistry, physics, and microbiology).
  • Certifications:
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Prerequisite Courses: Completion with a grade of “C” or better in:
    • Pharmacology
    • Anatomy and Physiology
    • General Chemistry (1 course)
    • Organic Chemistry (1 course)
    • Biochemistry (strongly recommended but not required)

Program Overview

The Midwestern University Nurse Anesthesia program provides an immersive education in both didactic and clinical practice. Students begin with advanced foundational sciences before progressing to anesthesia-specific coursework and clinical residencies. The program’s structure emphasizes evidence-based practice, interprofessional collaboration, and the mastery of anesthesia techniques across a wide spectrum of surgical and specialty settings, including cardiac, trauma, pediatric, and outpatient anesthesia. Graduates are eligible to take the National Certification Examination (NCE) administered by the NBCRNA upon completion.
