The Columbia University Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nurse Anesthesia Program is a full-time, 36-month track housed in the Columbia University School of Nursing that prepares registered nurses for advanced anesthesia practice and eligibility to sit for the National Certification Examination. Accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA), the program combines rigorous didactic coursework, high-fidelity simulation, and early clinical immersion through rotations at affiliate healthcare systems across the New York City region. With a selective admissions process and small cohort sizes, the curriculum emphasizes advanced anesthesia sciences, leadership, evidence-based practice, and interprofessional collaboration while exposing students to a wide range of perioperative settings, including tertiary/quaternary hospitals and specialty anesthesia care environments.

Program Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.

Current New York State nursing license or eligibility.

Minimum of one year experience in an accepted intensive care setting. Most entering students have at least 2-5 years of solid full-time ICU experience. Acceptable critical care experience includes: Surgical ICU, Medical ICU, Pediatric ICU, Cardiovascular ICU, Coronary Care Unit, Burn Unit, Trauma ICU, or Neuro ICU. Not acceptable: Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Emergency Room, Telemetry, Step Down, Neonatal ICU, or Cath Lab.

There is no minimum GPA requirement.

Satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). A competitive score is within the top 50th percentile.

Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) is highly recommended.

Course Prerequisites: Statistics, Two semesters of Chemistry (at least one organic course), and A physical assessment course. Applications are accepted with prerequisite coursework in progress; all prerequisites MUST be completed by the start of the program.
