Working as a CRNA in Maine

Maine offers a strong practice environment for CRNAs, particularly because of the state’s emphasis on expanding access to anesthesia services in rural and underserved areas. CRNAs routinely work in a wide range of facilities including Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, Maine Medical Center, MaineHealth, St. Joseph Healthcare, and Central Maine Medical Center. These settings include surgical centers, trauma hospitals, outpatient facilities, and community hospitals that rely heavily on CRNAs for anesthesia coverage.

Maine does not require anesthesiologist supervision for CRNAs. Nurse anesthetists may administer anesthesia and practice independently, although prescribing or managing medication orders that fall under a medical regimen require a collaborative physician relationship. This practice model gives CRNAs a high level of autonomy while still aligning with facility credentials and state regulatory requirements.

The growing demand for anesthesia providers, especially in rural communities, competitive compensation, and the ability to work with a high degree of independence make Maine an attractive state for CRNAs seeking a wide range of clinical experiences and responsibility in direct patient care.

Education and Certification

  • Educational Requirement: CRNAs must complete a doctoral degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program.
  • Certification: After graduation, candidates must pass the National Certification Examination (NCE) administered by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).

Licensure

Scope of Practice

  • Autonomy: In Maine, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) can practice independently in some circumstances. CRNAs can administer anesthesia without the need for an anesthesiologist to be on-site. However, CRNAs are responsible for aspects of anesthesia practice that require a medical regime, and must be accountable to a physician.
  • Prescriptive Authority: CRNAs may be authorized to prescribe medications as part of their practice.

Collaboration

State Regulations

CRNAs should stay updated on any changes in state laws and regulations affecting their practice. For current information, check out the Maine Board of Nursing and Maine CRNA Association .
