The Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Anesthesiology program is a full-time, 36-month track designed to prepare registered nurses for advanced anesthesia practice and eligibility to sit for the National Certification Examination. Typically enrolling a class of around 35 students each year, the program offers a personalized cohort experience with more than 35 clinical site options throughout Minnesota and the Upper Midwest, allowing exposure to a variety of settings from community hospitals to larger medical centers. Accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA), Saint Mary’s combines rigorous didactic coursework, simulation experiences, and meaningful clinical immersion while maintaining a strong record of high employment and certification success among graduates.

Program Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.

Current, un-encumbered Minnesota RN license, or eligibility for one.

A minimum of one year of experience in a critical care setting. This experience may or may not be current. Acceptable critical care experience includes: Adult ICU, Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, or Emergency Department at a level one trauma center. Not accepted: Recovery Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Non-trauma center ER, Telemetry, Dialysis, Surgery, CV lab, or Step-down units.

You must have skills and experience in: Hemodynamic monitoring, Pharmacologic intervention with vasopressors, Vasodilators, Cardiac inotropes, Cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring graphics interpretation, and Ventilator management.

An overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale or higher. GPA of 3.0 – 3.2 or higher in science and/or math courses is needed to be competitive.

The following certifications are not required, but preferred: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), NALS (Neonatal Advanced Life Support), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse), TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course), and ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support).

There are no specific course prerequisites, however, the following courses will help with your CRNA degree: Chemistry (organic or inorganic), Biochemistry, Physics, Calculus, Algebra, Statistics, and Pharmacology.
