The University of Pennsylvania Nurse Anesthesia Program is a full-time, doctoral-level curriculum embedded within an Ivy League academic medical environment and closely integrated with Penn Medicine. Students benefit from early and progressive clinical immersion at high-acuity tertiary and quaternary care hospitals, gaining exposure to complex surgical cases, advanced monitoring, and specialty anesthesia services. The curriculum emphasizes a strong scientific foundation in physiology and pharmacology alongside evidence-based practice, leadership, and interprofessional collaboration, preparing graduates for advanced anesthesia practice and eligibility for national certification.

Program Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.

Current and active Pennsylvania Registered Nursing license.

1 year of full time acute care experience is required. Each applicant is evaluated on an individual basis to determine the quality and quantity of critical care experience they possess. Note that all critical care experience must have taken place within the last 5 years. Unacceptable critical care experiences include: Telemetry, Cardiac Cath Lab, Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU or RR), and Emergency Room.

Minimum GPA of 3.0 in BSN program.

Scores of 153 on the verbal and 144 on the quantitative sections and 4.0 on the analytical writing section for the revised GRE are competitive. GRE scores of 500 or higher in both verbal and math are recommended for exams taken prior to August 2011. Applicants with a BSN from an institution in the US or Canada with a GPA greater than 3.2 may apply for a waiver.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to be CCRN certified.
