CRNA Practice Law & Requirements in Florida

With a mix of urban centers, tourist destinations, and a growing population, CRNAs can find a variety of job opportunities in hospitals, outpatient centers, and surgical facilities. Florida currently requires CRNAs to operate under physician supervision, however, there is legislation (HB 257) pending in Florida that would allow CRNAs to practice more independently. The competitive salaries in Florida, combined with no state income tax, can make it an attractive option for those looking to maximize their earnings while enjoying an active lifestyle in a state known for its beautiful weather and recreational activities.

Education and Certification

  • Educational Requirement: CRNAs must complete a doctoral degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program.
  • Certification: After completing their education, CRNAs must pass the National Certification Examination (NCE) administered by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).

Licensure

Scope of Practice

  • Autonomy: Florida does not allow CRNAs to practice independently. CRNAs must be supervised by a licensed physician.
  • Prescriptive Authority: CRNAs in Florida may have prescriptive authority for certain medications, enhancing their ability to manage patient care.

Collaboration

CRNA-only model, Collaborative Care Model, and Anesthesia Care (ACT) Model.

State Regulations

It is important for CRNAs to stay informed about any changes in state laws and regulations that may affect their practice.
